Words With Friends

Lesson: Expanding your vocabulary can get you more points!

I've been playing a lot of Words With Friends recently (thanks to having a new smartphone!) which has actually expanded my vocabulary. Here are just 10 of the new words I've learned recently:

  1. Alee - upon or toward the lee side of a vessel; away from the wind
  2. Dag - one of a series of decorative scallops or foliations along the edge of a garment, cloth, etc / an amusing, unusual person
  3. Dither - a trembling; vibration / to act irresolutely; vacillate / a state of confusion
  4. Fiat - an authoritative decree, sanction, or order
  5. Hie - to hasten; speed; go in haste
  6. Mort - a call blown on a hunting horn to signify the death of the animal hunted / a three-year-old salmon / a great deal; a great many
  7. Oca - a wood sorrel, Oxalis tuberosa, of the Andes, cultivated in South America for its edible tubers
  8. Toft - the site of a house and outbuildings / a house site and its adjoining arable land
  9. Withe - any tough, flexible twig or stem suitable for binding things together / an elastic handle for a tool, to lessen shock occurring in use / a partition dividing flues of a chimney
  10. Xi - the 14th letter of the greek alphabet (Ξ, ξ) / the group of consonant sounds represented by this letter

    I love learning new words from friends, or just throwing some letters up there and being pleasantly surprised if it goes through. ;)
